National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) supports
research addressing HIV epidemiology and pathogenesis in various population
groups. Studies are currently supported that focus on minorities, children,
mothers and infants, women, and men. One group of these studies is the
Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS), which was initiated in 1983 and is
currently supported through cooperative agreements. Because the current awardees
have unique access to the study cohorts, study data, and study specimens, the
NIAID intends to invite applications for competitive renewal of the MACS
cooperative agreements through a competition limited to the current awardees
only. Basic laboratory research using specimens obtained from the MACS will not
be included in any resultant awards; such studies will only be supported through
an open competition.

Although competition for this cooperative agreement study extension is limited,
NIAID wishes to call attention to its ongoing interest in applications for
prospective studies related to the etiology, pathogenesis, prevention, diagnosis,
and treatment of HIV infection and its sequellae.
