The National Institutes of Health, Office for Protection from

Research Risks is continuing to sponsor workshops on implementing the

Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory

Animals.  Each of the workshops scheduled for Fiscal Year 1997 will

focus on a specific theme.

 

The workshops are intended for institutional administrators, members

of Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees, laboratory animal

veterinarians, investigators and other institutional staff who have

responsibility for high-quality management of sound institutional

animal care and use programs.  Ample opportunities will be provided

to exchange ideas and interests through question and answer sessions

and informal discussions.

DESCRIPTION:  In light of the recent petitions to the NIH and the

USDA to ban the in vivo production of monoclonal antibodies, the

Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing is hosting a

workshop that will be cosponsored by the Office for Protection from

Research Risks at the NIH to examine in vivo and alternative

technologies in monoclonal antibody production.  Speakers will

present current state-of-the-science in vitro methodologies, as well

as address cost, animal welfare and IACUC issues.  Representatives

from NIH and USDA will address regulatory considerations relative to

the proposed ban.
