Each of the workshops scheduled for Fiscal Year 1996 will focus on a specific theme. The workshops are open to institutional administrators, members of Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUC), laboratory animal veterinarians, investigators and other institutional staff who have responsibility for high-quality management of sound institutional animal care and use programs. Ample opportunities will be provided to exchange ideas and interests through question and answer sessions and informal discussions. The PHS Policy and the USDA Regs both state that the Institutional Official is the person with the authority to commit the Institution to compliance with the PHS Policy and the USDA Regulations. Implicit with this authority is the responsibility for oversight to ensure a properly functioning animal care program. A knowledgeable and supportive Institutional Official is essential for establishing and maintaining a high quality animal care and use program. Topics of particular importance to Institutional Officials to be addressed in this workshop include: the role of members of the IACUC, the role of the Institutional Official in non-compliance, methods for evaluating the effectiveness of the Institutional program for animal care and use, and determine how effectively the program meets its mandates. Evaluation of the IACUC minutes, the IACUC semiannual program and facility reviews, and other indicators of program effectiveness will be discussed. Discussions will include evaluation of methods applicable to both large and small institutions and a variety of different species and research emphases.
