The National Institutes of Health, Office of Extramural Research (OER),

Office for Protection from Research Risks (OPRR) is continuing to

cosponsor workshops on implementing the Public Health Service Policy on

Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.  Each of the workshops

scheduled for Fiscal Year 1995 will focus on a specific theme.  The

workshops are open to institutional administrators, members of

Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees, laboratory animal

veterinarians, investigators and other institutional staff who have

responsibility for high-quality management of sound institutional

animal care and use programs.  Ample opportunities will be provided to

exchange ideas and interests through question and answer sessions and

information discussions.

DESCRIPTION:  The Workshop will address processes whereby Institutional

Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUC) can effectively evaluate their

institution's animal care and use program.  The PHS Animal Welfare

Policy and USDA Regulations state that at least once every six months

the institution's program for humane care and use of animals is to be

evaluated by the IACUC using the Guide and USDA Regulations (Title 9,

Chapter 1, subchapter A-Animal Welfare) as a basis.  Topics to be

included in the Workshop include:  A review of the program as described

in the Guide; institutional policy issues such as the occupational

health and safety program, personnel training, and the activities of

the IACUC and how effectively does it meet its mandates.  Other program

issues to be included are veterinary care, the animal environment, and

record reviews.  Reports of the IACUC semiannual program and facility

reviews will also be discussed.  Approaches useful to IACUC's serving

both small and large institutions will be included.
