PUBLIC CONVOCATION---THE RESPONSIBLE CONDUCT OF SCIENCE NIH GUIDE, Volume 23, Number 15, April 15, 1994 P.T. Keywords: National Academy of Sciences Meeting Date: June 6 and 7, 1994 The National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine are committed to bringing matters of responsible conduct to the full attention of participants in the scientific and engineering enterprise. In pursuit of that goal, the Academy complex will hold a major public convocation on the conduct of science on June 6 and 7, 1994. The meeting will review progress made by government, universities, and other institutions in addressing matters related to the conduct of science and engineering, including the handling of allegations of misconduct and the creation of educational programs for new and established investigators. The meeting will also examine next steps to ensure that the highest standards of conduct in science are maintained. Participants in the convocation will include scientists and engineers, leaders of professional societies, research and university administrators, science educators, the media, and decisionmakers in the Administration, Congress, and industry. Previous studies by panels formed by the Institute of Medicine and the Committee on Science, Engineering, and Public Policy have been supported by the National Institutes of Health and other Federal agencies, as well as private funds. The current requirement for instruction in the responsible conduct of research for trainees supported by NIH-funded institutional research training grants supports some of the recommendations from those panels.
