Purpose

NIAID will extend eligibility for submission of K99/R00 applications due to COVID–related disruptions.

Under normal circumstances, individuals must have no more than 48 months of cumulative postdoctoral research experience (i.e. all research experience subsequent to completion of the doctorate) to be eligible to apply for the NIAID K99/R00.

NIAID understands that COVID-19 has caused a major disruption in the ability of many individuals to make progress on their research. Though subject to future updates, NIAID now will provide a 2-receipt cycle extension (roughly 8 additional months) of eligibility for individuals who were eligible to apply for the K99/R00, under normal eligibility rules, between June/July 2021 and February/March 2022 (inclusive of these dates). In addition, those who normally would have been eligible to apply for the June/July 2022 receipt date will have a 1-receipt cycle (roughly 4 months) extension. Please note that this eligibility extension applies to AIDS and non-AIDS applications.

Example 1: Under normal eligibility rules, the final due date at which an individual can apply for the K99/R00 is June/July 12, 2021. This individual will now be eligible to apply for the K99/R00 in June/July 2021, October/November 2021 or February/March 2022.

Example 2: Under normal eligibility rules, the final due date at which an individual can apply for the K99/R00 is February/March 12, 2022. This individual will now be eligible to apply for the K99/R00 up through the October/November 2022 due dates.

Example 3: Under normal eligibility rules, the final due date at which an individual can apply for the K99/R00 is June/July 12, 2022. This individual will now be eligible to apply for the K99/R00 up through the October/November 2022 due dates.

Example 4: Under normal eligibility rules, the final due date at which an individual could apply for the K99/R00 was February/March 12, 2021. This individual is no longer eligible for the K99/R00.

Example 5: An individual applied for the K99/R00 at the February/March 2021 due date and, under the normal eligibility rules, was still within the eligibility window at the June/July 2021 due date. Because the review of this applicant’s initial submission was not completed in time for the applicant to resubmit at the June/July 2021 due date, this individual does not receive an extension of eligibility and is no longer eligible to apply for the K99/R00.

Example 6: An individual who has applied twice for the K99/R00 is not eligible for an extension.
