Issued by

National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS)

Purpose

The purpose of this notice is to inform the research community that NCATS intends to publish the reissuance of the suite of NOFOs for the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Program. The CTSA Program is a national, collaborative consortium focused on bringing more treatments to more patients more quickly through advancing clinical and translational science (CTS). The suite of NOFOs for the CTSA Program include the NOFOs below and the optional Specialized Innovation Program (RC2) NOFO that has been recently reissued as PAR-24-054 - “Limited Competition: High Impact Specialized Innovation Programs in Clinical and Translational Science for UM1 CTSA Hub Awards (RC2 Clinical Trials Optional)”.

The current suite of NOFOs, and respective funding mechanisms, to be reissued include:

  • Clinical and Translational Science Award (UM1 Clinical Trial Optional) (PAR-21-293)
  • Limited Competition: Mentored Research Career Development Program Award in Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program (K12 Clinical Trial Optional) (PAR-21-336)
  • Limited Competition: Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Predoctoral Research Training Grant for the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program (T32 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) (PAR-21-337)
  • Limited Competition: Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Postdoctoral Research Training Grant for the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program (T32 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) (PAR-21-338)
  • Limited Competition: NCATS Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Program Research Education Grants Programs (R25 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed) (PAR-21-339)

For the reissued suite of NOFOs, NCATS will again solicit the submission of a required set of companion applications: the Clinical and Translational Science Award (UM1) and companion Institutional Career Development Award (K12). The remaining NOFOs in the suite are optional and include the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) institutional training programs (T32 predoctoral and T32 postdoctoral), the Research Education Grant (R25), and the Specialized Innovation Program (RC2). These optional NOFOs are only available to CTSA Program UM1 applicants and award recipients.  Applications to the companion NOFOs cannot be awarded until an award has been issued for the UM1.

Budget tier requests (A, C, G, or T) of a companion K12 and/or optional T32 applications submitted in response to the reissued NOFOs must be the same budget tier of the respective UM1.

Funding tiers for any new or resubmitted K12 or T32 applications submitted within the UM1 7-year award project period will be tied to the awarded UM1 tier size (A, C, T or G). For example, if the UM1 was funded at a Tier G level then a new or resubmitted T32 postdoctoral application from the UM1 prime applicant institution must request an application budget that aligns with the Tier G level (2 postdoctoral trainee slots).

This Notice of Information is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. The content and requirements in the NOFOs intended to be published will supersede the information provided in this Notice and the current CTSA Program NOFO suite.

The NOFOs (UM1, K12, T32s and R25) are expected to be published in the summer of 2024 with an expected application due date in January 2025.

Reminders:

As a reminder, the K12 Physician Scientist Award Program required UM1 companion application must be submitted in accordance with the UM1 and K12 NOFOs application submission dates under the following scenario:

  • Initial concurrent submission of both a UM1 application and a K12 application.

The K12 Physician Scientist Award Program required companion application may be resubmitted in accordance with the applicable NOFO application submission dates under the following scenarios:

  • concurrently with the resubmitted UM1
  • while the UM1 application is under review consideration
  • after the UM1 application is funded
  • while the UM1 is under consideration for funding

While the K12 Physician Scientist Award Program required companion application must be submitted concurrently with the initial UM1 application or resubmitted at any time the submitted UM1 new or resubmission application or award remains active, the K12 Physician Scientist Award Program required companion application will only be awarded if the UM1 is awarded.

As a reminder, companion optional applications (T32s, R25, RC2) may be submitted in accordance with the applicable NOFO application submission dates under the following scenarios:

  • concurrently with the UM1
  • while the UM1 application is under review consideration
  • after the UM1 application is funded
  • while the UM1 is under consideration for funding

While optional companion applications may be submitted concurrently with the UM1 application or at any time the submitted UM1 new or resubmission application remains active, optional companion applications will only be awarded if the UM1 is awarded.

Applications are not being solicited at this time.
