The National Center for Research Resources announces a limited
competition for competitive new applications to develop networks of
biomedical research excellence in IDeA states. The competition is
restricted to only those institutions that currently hold a Biomedical
Research Infrastructure Networks award, RFA-RR-01-005 (see
http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-RR-01-005.html). The
purpose of this new Request for Application (RFA) is to augment and
strengthen the state's biomedical research capacity via support to
expand and develop biomedical faculty research capability and enhance
research infrastructure through support of a multi-disciplinary,
thematic scientific focus network to allow them to more fully compete
for research support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The objectives of this RFA are to: 1) establish a multi-disciplinary
research network with a broad thematic scientific focus that will build
and strengthen the lead and partner institutions' biomedical research
infrastructure; 2) build and increase the research base and capacity by
providing research support to faculty, postdoctoral fellows and
graduate students at the undergraduate institutions; 3) provide
research opportunities for undergraduate students and serve as a
"pipeline" for undergraduate students to continue in health research
careers; 4) provide outreach activities to students at undergraduate
institutions, community colleges and tribal colleges in the state; and
5) enhance science and technology knowledge of the state's workforce.

Support is contingent on availability of funds and eligibility is
restricted to currently funded BRIN Institutions only. The deadline
for receipt of applications is October 14, 2003.

NCRR staff will contact all eligible applicants directly regarding
application procedures, details and format. Inquiries regarding
programmatic issues should be directed to:
