Purpose

Musculoskeletal Health Research Priorities

NIOSH is providing the following guidance for extramural researchers interested in applying for research grants on musculoskeletal health (MSH).

Effective February 26, 2016, funding priority may be given to MSH intervention and surveillance research projects. Basic and etiologic research applications on MSH may not receive the same priority funding consideration.

Researchers are further advised that funding priority will be given to research applications that clearly identify and address NIOSH MSH priority goals for extramural research. In addition to MSH program priority goals, researchers are encouraged to consider additional MSH priority goals identified by other NIOSH programs, such as Healthcare and Social Assistance, Manufacturing and Wholesale and Retail Trade. These goals are available on the NIOSH Program Portfolio webpage and the NIOSH Extramural Research and Training Programs Funding Opportunities webpage. Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to regularly consult the websites listed above prior to preparing their applications.

MSH Extramural Research Priorities

At the time of publication for this notice, NIOSH has identified the following MSH priority goals for extramural research:

  • MSH Goal 1: Identify unique sources of surveillance data to identify the areas of needed MSH research.
  • MSH Goal 2: Reduce the incidence of work-related MSDs by implementing cost-effective workplace interventions to reduce MSH risk factors.
  • MSH Goal 3: Reduce the incidence of work-related MSDs through widespread and targeted dissemination and communication of safety and health information and effective education and training.

This guidance applies to new R21 applications beginning with June 2016 receipt dates.

As additional MSH research priorities are developed, they will be added to the websites listed above. Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to regularly consult those websites prior to preparing their applications.
