Notice Number: NOT-OH-06-003
Release Date: February 21, 2006
National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), (http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/homepage.html)
The purpose of this notice is to provide clarification in RFA-OH-06-004.
1. As noted in the RFA, “research and prevention efforts may be more clearly understood when workplace violence is divided into four categories: Criminal Intent (Type I) when the perpetrator has no legitimate relationship to the business and is usually committing a crime in conjunction with the violence; Customer/Client (Type II) when the perpetrator has a legitimate relationship with the business and becomes violent while being served by the business; Worker-on-Worker (Type III) when the perpetrator is an employee or past employee of the business who attacks or threatens another employee; and Personal Relationship (Type IV) when the perpetrator does not have a relationship with the workplace, but has a personal relationship with the intended victim.”
2. This RFA focuses on applications for research on Type I and Type III, primarily to maximize the benefits from the funds available. However, the significant occupational health impact of Type II and Type IV are fully appreciated.
3. This clarification is to emphasize that NIOSH recognizes the importance of funding research into each of the four types, including Type II and Type IV. For that reason, the RFA states that ” Applicants interested in Type II or Type IV violence should submit applications through one of the other NIOSH mechanisms of funding such as the Program Announcements that are listed on the NIOSH Web page at: http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/oep/funding.html.“ Applications seeking funding for research into Type II or Type IV violence through these other mechanisms are strongly encouraged.
