Division of Program Coordination, Planning and Strategic Initiatives, Office of Research Infrastructure Programs (ORIP)
The purpose of this Notice is to rescind NOT-OD-21-080 "Updated Notice of Limited Availability of Research Non-Human Primates".
Prior to the end of the Public Health Emergency for COVID-19 on May 11, 2023, a substantial decrease occurred in COVID-19 research-related requests for the use of nonhuman primates (NHPs) and/or specialized NHP facilities provided by the ORIP-supported National Primate Research Centers (P51) or P40 facilities. Therefore, the NIH COVID-19 Expert Panel will no longer be making programmatic priority recommendations for COVID-19-related research using NHPs or NHP facilities provided by ORIP-supported centers, despite the general NHP supply chain limitations described in the 2023 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report, Nonhuman Primate Models in Biomedical Research: State of the Science and Future Needs.
COVID-19 remains an important area of NIH-funded research, along with the many other areas of biomedical research that depend on the use of NHPs and specialized NHP facilities. Requests for the use of such NHP resources from ORIP-supported facilities across all areas of biomedical research will continue to be prioritized according to the standard established guidelines for ORIP-supported P51 and P40 centers.
