The NIH is hosting the virtual Pathways to Prevention Workshop: Nutrition as Prevention for Improved Cancer Health Outcomes to assess the scientific evidence on how nutritional interventions affect cancer health outcomes and identify research gaps.

Background

As many as 80% of people with cancer experience malnutrition. Malnutrition—a condition caused by not getting the right balance of nutrients such as protein, vitamins, and minerals—can interfere with cancer treatment and increase the risk of complications and death.

While malnutrition is common among people with cancer, nutritional screening and interventions are not standard parts of outpatient cancer care in the United States. Health care providers and decision-makers need high-quality research and a comprehensive review of the evidence to inform development of clinical guidelines and services to prevent or treat cancer-associated malnutrition.

Speakers in this workshop will discuss the current scientific evidence on how nutritional interventions affect cancer health outcomes. Attendees will have opportunities to submit questions and comments throughout the workshop. After the workshop, an independent panel will draft a report on evidence gaps and identify priorities for future research.

The workshop is co-sponsored by the NIH Office of Disease Prevention, National Cancer Institute, National Institute on Aging, NIH Office of Nutrition Research, and Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

This will be the eleventh workshop convened as part of the NIH Pathways to Prevention program. Pathways to Prevention workshops use an unbiased, evidence-based process to identify research gaps in a scientific area of broad public health importance and suggest ways to move the field forward.
