Specific Research Objectives and Scope

Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH)

The Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) is part of the Office of the Director of NIH and works in partnership with the 27 NIH Institutes and Centers to ensure that women's health research is part of the scientific framework at the NIH and throughout the scientific community. The 2019-2023 Trans-NIH Strategic Plan for Women's Health Research includes goals and objectives that aim to increase and improve women's health research supported by NIH. The ORWH encourages and supports biomedical research that both serves the entirety of the population of women in the US and attends to subpopulations of women for whom there is a disproportionate burden of disease and health risks. For this FOA, research proposed in alignment with the purpose and the health of women should address at least one objective from the strategic goals 1, 2, 3, or 4. ORWH is interested in supporting mission-focused innovative interdisciplinary, behavioral, clinical, and/or translational studies that are uniquely responsive to specific population-based, environmental, sociocultural, behavioral, and biological factors that influence health, health inequities, and disparities across their lifespan (e.g. sex and gender impacts). Specific areas of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Design, assess, and deploy reliable, community-congruent disease surveillance systems and use them to support effective health intervention programs that are relevant to the health of women (e.g. maternal morbidity and mortality/severe maternal morbidity prevention).
  • Develop and test strategies to enhance dissemination and implementation of evidence on chronic disease management in Native communities, including culturally adapted versions of evidence-based interventions for cardiometabolic syndromes, mental health, substance use disorders treatment.
  • Design, implement and evaluate studies using mHealth or other technologies to address health information access issues in Native communities.
