Purpose

NIH announces the launch of the 2020-2021 Technical and Business Assistance (TABA) Needs Assessment Program for NIH Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Phase I awardees and Phase I Fast-Track awardees. The TABA Needs Assessment Program is part of a comprehensive NIH TABA Program, intended to help small businesses identify and address their most pressing product development needs.

The TABA Needs Assessment Program provides a third party, unbiased assessment to help SBIR/STTR awardees identify the most critical technical and business areas to address for their product to be successful in the competitive healthcare marketplace. The TABA Needs Assessment is carried out by Vikriti Management Consulting, LLC on behalf of NIH. The program is designed to help SBIR/STTR awardees in the following areas:

  • Target market attractiveness (need/size)
  • Technology/solution’s ability to address market need
  • Regulatory path
  • Business model profitability
  • Competition and Intellectual Property
  • Sales and marketing strategy
  • Management team
  • Strategic partners
  • Funding status/ Financial plan
  • Potential exit plan

The Needs Assessment Program supports companies developing all types of technologies, e.g., clinical products such as devices, drugs, biologics, and therapeutics, as well as software, educational, and multi-media behavioral science products. The program helps companies identify their most pressing areas of need when acquiring strategic alliances, investors, and/or immediate customers.

Eligibility: Applicants must have had an active NIH SBIR or STTR Phase I or Phase I Fast-Track award (grant or contract) within the past two years. For companies with multiple awards, only one project will be considered for the program. Small businesses that have received TABA funding within their Phase I award are not eligible to participate.

Requesting a Needs Assessment: The Needs Assessment Program will be open throughout the year. Requests will be reviewed on a monthly basis with notification of status within 60 days of submission. The time commitment for participating companies is minimal (completion of the online request form and a few phone interviews with Vikriki staff) and participation is free. Companies that are selected will have their assessment reports completed in 2-3 months.
