Purpose
The purpose of this Notice is to announce that the NIH Office of Extramural Research (OER) will no longer offer the Protecting Human Research Participants course as of September 26, 2018. Users should complete any in-progress courses and/or print their course certificate before this date. Investigators are still required to comply with all aspects of the NIH policy Required Education in the Protection of Human Research Participants.
Background
In October 2000, the NIH implemented a policy ( NOT-OD-00-039) requiring all investigators submitting grant applications or responding to solicitations involving human subjects research to receive education on the protection of human subjects. Documentation of education is required prior to award for all key personnel who are responsible for the design and conduct of the study as outlined in NOT-OD-01-061.
On March 1, 2008, the NIH Office of Extramural Research (OER) began offering the online Protecting Human Research Participants tutorial as a public service. This course was one option to fulfill the protection of human subjects education requirement. Institutions using the Protecting Human Research Participants course to fulfill this requirement may choose to use another training program or develop a program to meet the requirement. NIH does not specify or endorse any specific educational programs. Frequently asked questions about the protection of human subjects education requirement are available at https://humansubjects.nih.gov/requirement-education.
