Purpose

ORIP is issuing this Notice to highlight interest in receiving K01 grant applications from Scholars proposing nonhuman primate (NHP) studies for research areas in addition to HIV/AIDS vaccine development. High priority research topics in HIV/AIDS can be viewed at https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-15-137.html or Office of AIDS Research’s (OAR) 2018 Trans-NIH Plan (https://www.oar.nih.gov/strategic_plan/fy2018/OAR_18_StrategicPlan_P10_508.pdf). Preclinical NHP research is critical for new strategies in prevention and treatment, advancement of research towards sustained remission and/or eradication of virus, understanding the impact of co-morbidities, co-infections, and complications, and the basic science that underpins improved health.

Examples of NHP studies that are encouraged through this Notice include, but are not limited to:

  • Simian Immunodeficiency Virus/ Simian-Human Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV/SHIV) infection prevention studies in infant, adolescent, adult, and aging NHP models
  • Research for new therapeutic strategies against SIV/SHIV infection (e.g. long-acting antiretrovirals, combination therapeutic antibody studies, and new regimens for neonate/infants)
  • Identification and characterization of the comprehensive latent/persistent SIV/SHIV reservoir(s) in NHPs effectively suppressed with antiretroviral therapy
  • Strategies that target the latent/persistent SIV/SHIV reservoirs in the context of suppressive antiretroviral therapy
  • Impact of co-morbidities and co-infections on SIV/SHIV acquisition/transmission and progression to AIDS
  • Imaging and monitoring/tracking SIV/SHIV, antibodies, and immune cells.

All requirements outlined in the Funding Opportunity Announcement (https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-16-347.html) need to be followed in any application (and funded award) that proposes to develop and conduct a study on one of these expanded research topics. These include the principal mentor must be an investigator actively using NHPs and the co-mentor must have extensive experience either translating NHP results to human studies or in human clinical trials.
