Purpose

The Office of Research on Women’s Health and co-sponsoring NIH institutes and centers (ICs) intend to reissue a Program Announcement with set aside funds (PAS-07-381) to solicit applications for Advancing Novel Science in Women’s Health Research (ANSWHR) [R21]. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will utilize the NIH Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant (R21) grant mechanism.

The goal of this initiative is to promote innovative, interdisciplinary research that will advance new concepts in women’s health research and the study of sex/gender differences. Recent research reports have established the importance of studying biomedical and behavioral topics specific to women, including the scientific and clinical importance of analyzing data separately for females and males. ORWH is particularly interested in encouraging extramural investigators to undertake new interdisciplinary research to advance studies on how sex and gender factors affect women's health; however, applications in all areas of women’s health and/or sex/gender research are invited. Applicants are encouraged to use the multiple principal investigator mechanism to facilitate collaborations among investigators with expertise in mathematics and computational multiscale modeling, bioengineering, biophysics, clinical, behavioral and experimental life sciences.

The ORWH does not intend to reissue PAS-07-382, a FOA of identical scientific scope that uses the Small Research Grant and Exploratory/Developmental (R03) award mechanism.

This notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. The PAS is expected to be published in early 2010 with an expected receipt date in Fall 2010.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
