National Institutes of Health

The NIH Office of Extramural Research announces a Workshop on
Definition of Pain and Distress in Laboratory Animals, supported in
part through the NIH, conducted under the auspices of the Institute for
Laboratory Animal Research (ILAR), Commission on Life Sciences,
National Academy of Sciences.

ILAR is hosting the workshop on the public policy implications of
changes to the definitions of pain and distress in USDA"s Policy #11,
"Painful/Distressful Procedures" and in the pain/distress categories on
the USDA annual report. Speakers at the workshop will provide
operative definitions of pain and distress based upon the principles
described in the 1992 ILAR report entitled "Recognition and Alleviation
of Pain and Distress in Laboratory Animals."

The workshop is responsive to the report "NIH Initiative to Reduce
Regulatory Burden - Identification of Issues and Potential Solutions"
(see http://grants.nih.gov/grants/policy/regulatoryburden/index.htm)
issued March 10, 1999, which recommended increased collaboration
between the research community and OLAW, USDA, and AAALAC, in the
formulation and interpretation of policies and guidelines, and
addressed a number of regulatory burdens in the area of laboratory
animal welfare, including the USDA pain classifications and the
associated paperwork requirements.

The workshop will be held June 22, 2000, in the auditorium of the
National Academy of Sciences Building, 2100 C Street, NW, Washington,
D.C., from 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. There is no registration fee and
the meeting is open to the public. If you would like to attend please
