SCIENCE AND ANIMAL WELFARE IN THE 21ST CENTURY

National Institutes of Health

The NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare, Office of Extramural Research, is 
cosponsoring, along with the University of South Alabama, the upcoming 
American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) Forum scheduled for May 
21-24, 2000 in Fort Myers, Florida.  The Forum is entitled  "Laboratory Animal 
Medicine: Advancing Science and Animal Welfare in the 21st Century."

The Forum will focus on the current "best practices" for humane endpoints that 
reduce or eliminate pain and distress for various types of research and  
testing, and strategies for developing and incorporating humane endpoints. New 
technologies that will support improved research and testing and that may also 
support refinement and reduction of animal use will be presented. The 
potential impact of emerging new technologies on animal use and welfare will 
also be discussed.
