UPCOMING NIH REGIONAL SEMINAR ON PROGRAM FUNDING AND GRANTS ADMINISTRATION

A regional seminar covering topics related to the National
Institutes of Health extramural program funding and grants
administration has been scheduled for Thursday and Friday, June 1
and 2, in Kansas City, Missouri.
The NIH regional seminars provide participants with an opportunity
to learn about NIH policies and procedures through a series of
presentations targeted to new and senior researchers, research
administrators, post docs and trainees. The seminars also allow
participants to meet, mingle and get answers from NIH program,
grants management, policy and review staff, as well as from some of
their own institutional officials.
The seminar, hosted by the Kansas City Life Sciences Taskforce, will
feature both plenary and break-out sessions to accommodate all
interests. Plenary session will be held on Scientific Peer Review,
Research Integrity, and Electronic Research Administration. Break-
out sessions will include: Funding Opportunities for New
Investigators, Modular Grants, Research Administration for Faculty,
Intellectual Property, Clinical Trials, Compliance Issues, Project
Monitoring, NIH Fundamentals, NIH Contracts Management, Small
Business Innovation Research (SBIR), Development of Institute and
Center Program Priorities, Specific IC Program Initiatives, Human
Subjects, Animal Welfare, and a Mock Study Section Review.
Electronic Research Administration Computer Laboratories will be
held twice daily at the Henry W. Bloch School of Business and Public
Administration on the University of Missouri Kansas City campus to
provide participants with hands-on experience using the NIH Commons.
Transportation will be provided.
Children’s Mercy Hospital will award continuing medical education
(CME) hours and nursing contact hours. Up to 11 Category I CME Hours
and 13 Nursing Contact Hours may be earned for attendance at the
entire seminar.
The Stower’s Institute will host a reception on Thursday evening
from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Tours of the new cancer research facility
will be offered at that time.
The complete program, including a list of NIH faculty, is available
upon request. Programs and registration confirmations will be mailed
in early April.

LOCATION:
The conference sight is the Kansas City Marriott Downtown, located
at 200 W 12th Street, Kansas City, Missouri. The Marriott provides
transportation for hotel guest from the KCI Airport for $12.00 one-
way or $20.00 roundtrip. White courtesy phones are located in
baggage claim areas where you dial 5000 for Marriott transportation
service. The Marriott will offer special room rates of $119.00 for
single occupancy rooms for conference participants until May 10,
2000. Participants should reference the NIH Regional Seminar when
you call. Special conference rates for double and triple occupancy
are also available. Government rates are based on availability.

FUTURE SEMINARS
Another NIH Regional Meeting Seminar is planned on July 13 and 14,
2000 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. No separate mailing
list is maintained for the regional seminars. Information on
