OFFICE FOR PROTECTION FROM RESEARCH RISKS NOTICE OF UPCOMING MEETINGS ON INSTITUTIONAL ANIMAL CARE AND USE COMMITTEES Release Date: February 22, 2000 NOTICE: OD-00-023 National Institutes of Health This notice announces the upcoming March 13-14, 2000, IACUC Conference cosponsored by Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R), AAALAC International, and Tufts University School of Medicine, entitled, IACUCs: The Ethics, the Politics, and the Reality. In addition, the Applied Research Ethics National Association (ARENA) will hold ARENA's 2000 IACUC Conference March 12. The meetings provide guidance and education to Public Health Service (PHS) awardee institutions and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUCs) on implementation of the provisions of the PHS Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (PHS Policy). The meetings will be held in Boston, MA, at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers. The meetings will examine the ways in which animal care and use may be improved for all stakeholders involved. Presentations will focus on the legal, moral, and practical aspects of IACUC responsibilities, and will offer concrete and productive ways to enhance its performance. Representatives from the USDA, the Office for Protection from Research Risks, and AAALAC International will give their perspectives, as will scientists, veterinarians, administrators, ethicists, and other key representatives from academia, research institutions, and industry. Workshops will provide a forum for participants to voice opinions and ask specific questions.
