Purpose

The purpose of this Notice is to inform potential applicants that the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) will participate, effective immediately, in PAR-18-296 "Complex Integrated Multi-component Projects in Aging Research (U19 Clinical Trial Optional)" and that studies focused on Alzheimer's disease Related Dementia (ADRD) research supporting natural history studies that will contribute to clinical trial readiness for Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD) are of interest to both the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS).

Applications addressing this area of FTD research should include large cohorts of both genetically defined and sporadic forms of the FTD disease spectrum. It is anticipated that these cohorts will contribute to early and late stage clinical trials in FTD by providing genetic resources, harmonized clinical and imaging data collection and standardized biosample collection for current or future clinical diagnostic, prognostic and progression biomarker development. Research in this area is in response to the Alzheimer's Disease-Related Dementias (ADRD) milestones in the 2017 update to the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease. To address the complexity of infrastructure required for these studies, applicants are advised to apply under PAR-18-296, " Complex Integrated Multi-Component Projects in Aging Research (U19 Clinical Trial Optional)".

The following sections of PAR-18-296 have been updated (shown in italics) to reflect the participation of NINDS in this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA).

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the National Institute on Aging are interested in Alzheimer’s disease Related Dementia (ADRD) research supporting natural history studies that will contribute to clinical trial readiness for Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD). Applications addressing this area of FTD research should include large cohorts of both genetically defined and sporadic forms of the FTD disease spectrum and support cohorts that will enable early and late stage clinical trials in FTD. Research in this area is in response to the Alzheimer's Disease Related Dementias (ADRD) challenges outlined in the 2017 update to the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease.
