Purpose

The purpose of this notice is to inform the community of a change in NINDS policy regarding eligibility for the K99/R00 Transition to Independence Award.

The standard eligibility window for the K99/R00 is 48 months of postdoctoral research experience. All research experience post-doctorate, whether in a postdoctoral fellowship position, any other position of employment where there is an expectation of research activity, or continuation in the predoctoral laboratory after leaving the graduate program, counts towards the K99/R00 eligibility clock. This policy applies for both new and amended applications.

Effective immediately with publication of this notice, NINDS will extend the K99/R00 eligibility window by 8 months for individuals who have a child who is born or adopted during the standard 48 month eligibility window. This extension is in addition to any official leave of absence that is taken.
