Purpose

Specifically it describes that under some circumstances participants are eligible for support even if they are in a faculty position.

Part 2. Full Text of Announcement

Section I. Funding Opportunity Description

Paragraph 4 currently reads:

A one to two year gap in time between the support during residency and support during fellowship is acceptable if the gap is required to obtain clinical fellowship training. Research activity between a second and third period of support must be continuous. Funds may not be used for those in faculty positions.

Paragraph 4 is modified to read:

A one to two year gap in time between the support during residency and support during fellowship is acceptable if the gap is required to obtain clinical fellowship training. Research activity between a second and third period of support must be continuous. In general, funds may not be used for those in faculty positions. In some unusual circumstances, however, participants may obtain temporary, junior faculty appointments [e.g. "Instructor," etc.] before completion of the 2 years of fellowship eligibility. In these circumstances, individuals are eligible for continued R25 support as long as there is no gap in their participation in the R25 program between the fellowship and the temporary, junior faculty position. Moreover, to be eligible for support, the requirement remains that the participant must devote 80% effort to the R25 research education program. The salary component of the award, regardless of professional position, will be capped at 80% of the chronologically appropriate PGY salary, and will be no greater than 80% of the PGY salary for the applicant institution. Salary supplementation from other sources, if required to retain the 80% effort requirement, is allowable, as long as it does not require duties different from, or in addition to, those directly associated with the R25 research education program.

All other aspects of this FOA remain unchanged.
