Interests of Specific Institutes/Centers

National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR)
NINR will include the following IC specific language:
NINR is focused on research associated in promoting health and quality of life and prevention strategies across the HIV/AIDS continuum, particularly in areas focusing on symptom mechanism(s), biobehavioral interventions, prevalence disparity, age-related decision making, and palliative and end-of-life care, such as:

  • Interventions and instrumentation studies to manage the physical and psychosocial symptoms associated with HIV infection, its complications and its treatment, such as frailty, fatigue, wasting, sleep disturbances, pain, cognitive impairment, neuropathies, anxiety, and depression.
  • Symptom management in co-morbid non-AIDS related conditions in older adults with HIV/AIDS.
  • Symptom management, differentiated from normal aging symptoms, in AIDS-related disease across the lifespan.
  • Age appropriate behavioral interventions to increase treatment adherence and prevention strategies.
  • Underlying factors explaining differential responses to clinical conditions and treatment regimens, as well as methods to address these factors, specifically in relation to HAART and other retroviral therapies
  • Psychoneurological or biobehavioral interventions to maintain or improve immune-competence in HIV+ persons
