Background/Rationale
The NIH mentored Career Development (K) programs are designed to provide advanced research training and experience to researchers with research and/or clinical doctorate degrees who have the potential to develop into independent investigators. Current NIMH policy (NOT-MH-22-310) limits eligibility to those having no more than 6 years of postdoctoral research experience to be eligible to apply for a K01/K08/K23.
NIMH periodically evaluates and responds to events that may affect the ability of investigators to remain competitive for NIH support. Recognizing the disproportionate effect of system-wide disruptions on early career researchers with strict eligibility timelines, this proactive response seeks to minimize unintended impacts while reinforcing NIMH's commitment to supporting the next generation of scientists.
Implementation
The eligibility extension listed in this Notice applies only to the parent Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) Announcements (PA-24-175 , PA-24-176, PA-24-177, PA-24-181, PA-24-182, PA-24-183 PA-24-184, PA-24-185, and PA-24-186).
For eligible applicants submitting new or resubmission applications, extension will be automatically accepted by the NIMH. However, prospective applicants who wish to receive extensions for personal or family situations (see Eligible Individuals under Section III of PA-24-175 , PA-24-176, PA-24-177, PA-24-181, PA-24-182, PA-24-183 PA-24-184, PA-24-185, and PA-24-186) must continue to provide relevant documentation to NIMH in advance of application. Multiple extensions for overlapping events will not be permitted. Please contact program official(s) at the NIMH for further guidance.
