Notice of Additional Areas of Research Interest for PA-12-141 and PA-12-142 - Research on Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) (R01 & R21)

Purpose

The purpose of this Notice is to inform potential applicants that, in addition to the Specific Areas of Research Interest for the NIMH listed in PA-12-141 and PA-12-142, additional examples of relevant research topics include:

  • Develop highly predictive markers and/or algorithms for determining risk of post-traumatic adjustment concerns;
  • Examine the potential value of early interventions for trauma-exposed children for prevention of anxiety, depressive, and substance use disorders;
  • Develop and test brief interventions for severe child mental health problems, such as youth suicide, for delivery initiated in an emergency room setting;
  • Develop and validate approaches to screening youth at-risk for suicide who present to emergency settings.
  • Develop and test strategies to promote appropriate follow-up and aftercare for children and adolescents presenting to an emergency department following a suicide attempt or other behavioral health emergency services visits.
  • Examine the effects of quality improvement strategies, patient safety goals, and standards of care recommended and required by relevant stake holders and professional accreditation organizations on detecting and managing youth suicidal behaviors, and broader strategies for management of pediatric, child, and adolescent trauma.
  • Develop strategies for resolving methodological and ethical problems in EMSC research, including issues related to informed consent/confidentiality, methods for tracking follow-up outcomes of youth who present to emergency services, and selection of appropriate comparison groups.

All other aspects of the FOAs remain unchanged.
