Part 2. Section I. Funding Opportunity Description

NIMHD Specific Interests

NIMHD aims to lead scientific research to improve minority health and reduce health disparities in populations that experience health disparities (based on the NIH designation and NIMHD research priorities i.e., racial/ethnic minority groups, people with lower socioeconomic status and intersectionality with rural populations, sexual and gender minority (SGM) groups, and people with disabilities (see https://www.nimhd.nih.gov/funding/nimhd-funding/funding-strategy.html). Projects with a domestic focus in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, tribal lands, and U.S. territories are also a priority.

Areas of research of interest to NIMHD include but are not limited to the following:

  • Projects promoting the career development, training and mentoring of Early-Stage Investigators (ESI) at the postdoctoral level or beyond conducting HIV/AIDS research in U.S. Hispanic/Latino and Black/African American communities.
  • Projects led by ESI from U.S. under-represented minorities (as defined by the Notice of NIH’s Interest in Diversity, i.e. Hispanic/Latino, Black/African American, American Indian/Alaska Native).
  • Projects focused on optimization of prevention, screening, diagnosis, and viral load suppression among women from populations that experience health disparities, and MSM of Black/African American or Hispanic/Latino background are of interest.
  • Studies on the role and effectiveness of primary care settings in enhancing screening and improving prevention with PrEP in persons at high risk of HIV/AIDS from populations that experience health disparities, and in attaining optimal viral load suppression in patients living with HIV are also of interest.

Applicants with questions about the suitability of a prospective application to NIMHD should contact the Scientific/Research Contact. Although domestic projects are prioritized, if applicants propose a foreign component, applicants must explicitly describe how proposed activities at foreign sites will contribute to knowledge that will improve minority health and/or help to reduce or eliminate health disparities in the United States.
