NCMHD ENDOWMENT PROGRAM FOR INCREASING RESEARCH AND TRAINING CAPACITY IN SECTION 
736 HEALTH PROFESSIONS SCHOOLS

National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities

This is a notice of limited competition.  The United States Congress 
enacted Public Law 106-525 on November 22, 2000, which established the 
National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD).  The 
law also authorized the establishment of an endowment program at 
eligible Section 736 health professions schools.  The Congress has 
determined that the establishment of Federally supported endowment 
funds is an appropriate method of building research and training 
capacity in institutions that make significant investments in the 
education and training of underrepresented minority and 
socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals.  This notification 
specifically targets  Section 736 Institutions with currently funded 
Programs of Excellence in Health Professions Education for 
Underrepresented Minority Individuals .  A description of such health 
professions schools is provided in Section 736 of Title I of the Public 
Health Service Act (42 U.S.C. 293).  

Pursuant to P.L. 106-525, the  Minority Health and Health Disparities 
Research and Education Act of 2000,  Section 736 Institutions with net 
endowment assets that are less than or equal to 50 percent of the 
 national average  are eligible to apply for endowment fund support.  
The purpose of the program is to facilitate capacity building for 
minority health disparities research and other health disparities 
research at such institutions.
