Purpose

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) intends to promote a new initiative by publishing a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for establishing eight Regional Medical Libraries (RMLs) as part of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM). The goal of the RMLs is to advance the progress of medicine and improve public health by providing U.S. health professionals with equal access to biomedical information and to improve the public’s access to health information enabling them to make informed decisions about their health. To achieve this goal, RMLs develop collaborations among health sciences libraries, other types of libraries and organizations; improve access to and sharing of biomedical information resources; promote awareness of, access to, and use of biomedical information resources for health professionals and the public; and develop, promote and improve electronic access to health information by libraries, health professionals, and organizations providing health information to the public. The RMLs along with the NLM and other partners form the National Network of Libraries of Medicine coordinate activities and achieve the aforementioned goals on a national level. This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.

The FOA is expected to be published in Spring 2015 with an expected application due date in Summer 2015.

This FOA will utilize the UG4 cooperative agreement mechanism. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

This Notice encourages U.S. Health Sciences Libraries to consider applying for a RML within their geographical area.

The NLM plans to fund one RML in each of the 8 following regions.

• Region 1 Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.
• Region 2 Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
• Region 3 Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
• Region 4 Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Utah, and Wyoming.
• Region 5 Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.
• Region 6 Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.
• Region 7 Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, and U.S. Territories in the Pacific Basin.
• Region 8 Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.
