The NLM plans to issue a Request for Applications in a single competition for support of pre-doctoral and post-doctoral institutional training in biomedical informatics. This RFA will be released and published in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts early in January of 2006. Funding decisions will be made by September or October of 2006 to enable funded sites to begin recruiting trainees for the 2007-2008 academic year. Grants will be awarded July 1, 2007 for the five year project period. It is anticipated that the next competition for NLM training sites will take place in 2011.

The NLM currently supports 18 institutional sites for biomedical informatics training (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/ep/GrantTrainInstitute.html). Renewal applications are welcome from sites that are currently funded under this program, as are new applications from sites that are not currently funded. Only domestic, non-profit, public or private institutions may apply for these training grants. Institutions may submit no more than one application. Consortium applications will be accepted, but a single institution must submit the application representing all consortium members.

Training funded under this RFA will emphasize the preparation of individuals capable of carrying out independent research in biomedical informatics. NLM defines biomedical informatics as the intersection of basic informational and computing sciences with a wide range of application domains in biomedicine. Applicants will be expected to select one or more application domains for emphasis in their proposed programs. All trainees supported by NLM in these programs must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
