Purpose

The purpose of this Notice is to inform potential applicants that the NHLBI is participating, effective immediately, in PAR-23-166 Native American Research Centers for Health (NARCH) (S06 Clinical Trial Optional).

NHLBI has a strong history of supporting research to understand, document, prevent, and treat heart, lung, blood, and sleep (HLBS) disorders in Native communities. These communities are disproportionally affected by heart disease, hypertension, and respiratory diseases. NHLBI’s participation in NARCH will help advance research efforts, reduce risk factors, and promote the health of Native communities. NHLBI also recognizes a unique and compelling need to promote diversity in the biomedical, behavioral, clinical, and social science research workforce. NHLBI is interested in research projects  involving Native communities including, but not limited to, the following:

  • the etiology, prevention, and reduction of cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality and its risk factors (including psychosocial and behavioral risk factors)
  • the causes, prevention, and treatment of lung diseases, such as asthma and COPD, and sleep disorders, such as insufficient sleep, poor sleep quality, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
  • the causes, prevention, and management of blood diseases and disorders, such as iron-deficiency anemia
  • the sustainable delivery of proven-effective, evidence-based interventions to improve overall health in tribal communities

NHLBI will also support research, career enhancement activities, and pilot projects for faculty and students that can include opportunities for capacity-building, research training, and career development.
