Purpose

There are still many knowledge gaps about HIV-related heart, lung, and blood diseases and sleep disorders. These scientific areas include key aspects of the basic mechanisms, epidemiology, treatment, and prevention of HIV-related coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, vascular disease, chronic lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, thromboembolism, and anemia.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) is interested in accepting investigator-initiated administrative supplement requests for existing NHLBI awards to expand HIV-related heart, lung, blood, and sleep research within the original Council-approved scope of the parent award. Examples of responsive requests would include, but not limited to, the following: 1) enhancing specific aims related to HIV-related heart, lung, and blood diseases and sleep disorders; 2) including studies of HIV-relevant animal and cell models; 3) increasing sample sizes of HIV-related heart, lung, blood, and sleep studies; 4) enriching heart, lung, blood, and sleep study populations with HIV-infected subjects to allow for meaningful subgroup analysis; and 5) enhancing research of blood and blood cells, including stem cells, as resources for transfusion or transplantation that is related to the prevention of HIV transmission or for HIV cure.

The requested award budget cannot exceed $150,000 in direct costs. The work must be completed within the approved project period of the parent award and stay within the original Council-approved scope of the parent award.

Although this Notice identifies an opportunity to request administrative supplements, there is no guarantee that funds are available from the NHLBI for any specific grant. All applicants are strongly encouraged to discuss potential requests with the NHLBI contact listed below, as well as their NHLBI program officer. Additionally, applicants must review the NHLBI requirements for administrative supplements to grants and cooperative agreements prior to submission.

Administrative supplement requests focusing on HIV-related heart, lung, blood diseases and sleep disorders must conform to the requirements of, and be submitted under, PA-14-077. These requests should also adhere to the published NIH Office of AIDS Research guidelines in NOT-OD-15-137.
