Background
RFA-HL-09-004 was released January 30, 2009 and the NHLBI Progenitor Cell Biology Consortium was established in the late Fall of 2009. The NHLBI Progenitor Cell Biology Consortium seeks to develop an improved understanding of the biology of stem and progenitor cells, and to harness this knowledge for the diagnosis and treatment of heart, lung, and blood diseases. The Consortium consists of multiple clusters, each forming a virtual Research Hub. In addition to interactions within Research Hubs, there is extensive collaboration between Hubs. The Consortium is supported by an Administrative Coordinating Center (ACC) to provide logistical support to the Consortium activities. The ACC is responsible for solicitation of applications for cores and oversees the peer review and award of subcontracts under the guidance of an External Advisory Committee and NHLBI staff.

In order to foster synergy and bring new expertise and resources to the Consortium, NHLBI is establishing funding Ancillary/Collaborative Studies. Funds for the Ancillary/Collaborative Studies have been set aside through the Administrative Coordinating Center, which will administer the application, review and funding process.
