Notice of Intent to Publish a Request for Applications on New Strategies for Growing 3D Tissues (R01/R21)

Notice Number: NOT-HL-11-105

Key Dates
Release Date:  March 11, 2010

Issued by
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), (

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) intends to promote a new initiative by publishing a Request for Applications (RFA) to solicit applications to improve our understanding of how cells respond to their environment and develop accurate assays and methods to understand how angiogenesis and organogenesis may instruct the creation of 3D engineered cellular aggregates.  This program is expected to develop new technologies by tissue engineers who effectively collaborate with scientists with relevant expertise in developmental and cell biology, systems biology, chemistry, physics and organ physiology.   The overall purpose of this program is to support highly integrated multidisciplinary scientific teams to advance the field beyond the more basic levels of structural and functional complexity and learn how to use the signals and microenvironments which direct normal angiogenesis and organogenesis in developing vertebrates.  These advances will be aimed towards addressing our knowledge gaps in tissue repair and regeneration.  Institutes expected to participate in the RFA include the NHLBI, the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), and the National Institute for Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS).

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.

The RFA is expected to be published in May 2010 with an application receipt date in September 2010.

This RFA will be published as two parallel funding opportunity announcements utilizing the R01 (NHLBI and NIBIB) and R21 (NHLBI and NIAMS) grant mechanisms.
