Purpose

This Notice revises and expands the objectives and funding for NIH-Supported Centers for Population Health and Health Disparities (CPHHD) (P50) published in the NIH Guide on December 23, 2008: RFA-CA-09-001

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA), sponsored jointly by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), and Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR) of the National Institutes of Health, solicits grant applications for Centers for Population Health and Health Disparities (CPHHD) Program.  This Notice increases the funds available from NHLBI from $18 million over 5 years to $50 million over 5 years, to fund five centers.

In addition, NHLBI broadens the scope of research that will be supported.  Centers proposed for funding by the NHLBI should target disparities in cardiovascular diseases, and may include components that address lung diseases, blood diseases, or sleep disorders.  In addition to supporting centers whose primary objective is the development of interventions to reduce health disparities, NHLBI will support centers whose primary aim includes observational studies that explicate differences in the incidence, prevalence, mortality, and burden of cardiovascular and related adverse health conditions that exist among specific population groups in the United States.
