Purpose

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) intends to issue a Request for Applications (RFA) to solicit applications for the Programs of Excellence in Glycosciences (P01). The goal of this initiative is to foster research and training in glycosciences in areas relevant to the mission of the NHLBI by creating multidisciplinary teams and supporting basic and translational research projects, shared core resources, and a strong glycoscience skills development component.  The ultimate goal will be to translate emerging discoveries in glycosciences into new diagnostics and clinical applications as well as to build capacity, creating a cadre of “scientifically bilingual” investigators, fluent in glycan chemistry and biology that will sustain and advance the application of glycosciences to heart, lung, and blood research. This initiative addresses recommendations made by the NHLBI Working Group report on “The Roles of Glycans in Hemostasis, Inflammation and Vascular Biology” (http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/meetings/workshops/glycans.htm), which was held in February 2008.

This notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.  The RFA is expected to be published in Fall 2009 with an expected receipt date in May 2010.

This RFA will utilize the P01 grant mechanism.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
