NOTICE OF LIMITED COMPETITION REQUEST FOR COMPETING APPLICATIONS: NHLBI
FAMILY BLOOD PRESSURE PROGRAM (FBPP)

RELEASE DATE: June 22, 2004

NOTICE: NOT-HL-04-114

National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI)

APPLICATION RECEIPT DATE: September 14, 2004

The NHLBI is requesting competing renewal applications from the investigators
currently funded as part of the NHLBI Family Blood Pressure Program (please see
http://apps.nhlbi.nih.gov/popstudies/Contacts.ASP?TrialNumber=1153 for currently funded
applications). These programs were awarded as a result of Request for
Applications (RFA) HL-94-011, Genetic Determinants of High Blood Pressure
(https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-HL-94-011.html) and its
competing renewal. This Program consists of four Networks investigating the
genetic contributions to hypertension and associated risk factors. The FBPP
provides a unique collaborative structure for basic and clinical research in
hypertension. The extensive time and processes involved in establishing a
collaboration essential for efficient development and implementation of protocols
and analysis as a Program warrants this limited re-competition for one three year
renewal cycle. The experience gained by the current group of investigators in
working together, designing protocols suitable for a research network setting,
standardized quality control and producing high quality follow-up data is
considerable. The FBPP pooled data set provides a unique resource of unparalleled
value for hypertension gene discovery and studies of complex disease genetics.
The NHLBI would like to provide continued support to the FBPP, who will also
implement a plan to make FBPP-owned data available to the public scientific
research community. Keeping the group intact, and encouraging the incorporation
of new ideas and analyses within the scope of the FBPP goals, will take maximum
advantage of the collaborative effort and resources already developed by the FBPP,
and will also allow for significant contributions to advance hypertension
research.

The renewal as defined under this notice of limited competition will not include
large scale recruitment of new participants or follow up clinical exams on
existing participants. However, renewal applications may include in depth,
controlled clinical and/or physiological investigations in a limited number of
selected participants. Plans for data sharing of this unique resource will be a
part of this renewal application
(https://grants.nih.gov/grants/policy/data_sharing).

SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION

Applications must be prepared using the PHS 398 research grant application
instructions and forms (rev. 5/2001). Applications must have a DUN and Bradstreet
(D&B) Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) number as the Universal Identifier
when applying for Federal grants or cooperative agreements. The DUNS number can be
obtained by calling (866) 705-5711 or through the web site at
http://www.dunandbradstreet.com/. The DUNS number should be entered on line 11 of
the face page of the PHS 398 form. The PHS 398 document is available at
https://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/phs398/phs398.html in an interactive format.
