National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI)
The National Human Genome Research Institute intends to issue a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications that stimulate innovation and advance understanding of when, where and how best to implement the use and sharing of genomic information and technologies in clinical care in all persons including populations or communities that experience health disparities, such as racial or ethnic minority groups, people with lower socioeconomic (SES) status, underserved rural communities, and sexual and gender minority groups.
The intended Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) will be based on a concept recently approved by the National Advisory Council on Human Genome Research and accompanying discussion.
This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop responsive projects. Details of the planned NOFO are provided below.
The NOFO is expected to be published in the Spring of 2023 with an expected application due date in the Fall of 2023.
This NOFO will utilize the the R21 activity code. Details of the planned NOFO are provided below.
The goal of the intended NOFO is to encourage scientific research studies focused on genomic medicine, defined as using genomic information about an individual as part of their clinical care (e.g., for screening, diagnostic, or therapeutic decision-making) and the health outcomes and policy implications of that clinical use. Projects will be broadly applicable to genomic medicine as a field; applications focusing on a particular disease or organ system should make the case for generalizability to multiple diseases and organ systems.
In the context of their relevance to genomic medicine, the following are some examples of the areas of research studies that would be appropriate for these NOFOs:
This NOFO will utilize the R21 activity code. A related NOFO utilizing the R01 activity code will be issued. Additionally, a Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) will be released to encourage small businesses to submit applications that advance genomic medicine research through the Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer parent grants, which utilize the R43/R44 activity codes.
