Specific Areas of Research Interest

Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD):

The NICHD mission is to lead research and training to understand human development, improve reproductive health, enhance the lives of children and adolescents, and optimize abilities for all. The NICHD's broad and diverse research portfolio includes research related to conception and pregnancy; typical and atypical development in childhood; childhood trauma and critical illness; the transition from adolescence to adulthood; reproductive health; rehabilitation; intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities; and population dynamics across the lifespan.

The NICHD Strategic Plan includes Health Disparities and Disease Prevention as cross-cutting topics. Pervasive disparities exist in the health of racial/ethnic, rural, low-resource, sexual and gender minority, and other underrepresented populations. Understanding the contribution of social, economic, structural, and regional factors is vital to advancing disease prevention and intervention efforts. NICHD is particularly interested in research that addresses maternal and infant mortality and morbidity, injuries in children, and risk-taking behaviors in adolescents.

NICHD has a long history of supporting research on the role of families on child health and human development, and on factors affecting the family structure, family dynamics, and family health. In addition to the NIMHD designated disparity populations, NICHD and NCMRR also consider persons with disabilities as health disparity populations.

For this PAR, topics of interest to NICHD include, but are not limited to research on:

  • Protective and risk factors in family health and family-level interventions
  • The influence of family health on health pregnancies, maternal morbidity and mortality, postpartum health, and neonatal/infant mortality.
  • Improving the care of family members with complex medical needs including children with complex health conditions and/or developmental disabilities
  • Family impacts on clinical/health outcomes, including continuity of care, reduction or prevention of complications, and family engagement for NICHD populations
  • Associations between family context (home setting and family characteristics), child and adolescent health, and the transition to adulthood
  • Family health influences on healthy pregnancies and infant and child wellness
  • Characteristics and strategies that enable families and communities to provide high quality of life and participation, while reducing barriers, for persons with disability.
  • Evaluate the stressors, challenges, and benefits experienced by care partners of individuals with disabilities; formulate approaches to address the impact of these on the health of both the care partner and the care recipient

All other aspects of the FOA remain unchanged.
