Purpose

The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) wishes to affirm its continued commitment to supporting high-priority mission-related research projects using the R21 Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant mechanism. This includes projects that meet the NIH definition of clinical trials (https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-15-015.html).

Therefore, effective with the October 16, 2017 application due date, the NICHD R21 Funding Opportunity Announcement (PA-17-259) is changed to indicate that clinical trials will be accepted. All other provisions of PA-17-259 will remain in effect.

Starting January 25, 2018, the NIH policy on clinical trials FOAs goes into effect (https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-17-043.html). Potential applicants are encouraged to watch the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts (https://grants.nih.gov/funding/about-nih-guide-to-grants-and-contracts.htm) and the NICHD webpage (https://www.nichd.nih.gov/grants-funding/policies-strategies/policies/Pages/default.aspx) for further instructions about submitting applications for research projects that involve clinical trials.

Questions about NICHD high-priority research topics should be directed to the staff contacts listed on PA-17-259 or to the appropriate program staff listed on the NICHD webpage at: https://www.nichd.nih.gov/grants-funding/grants-process/NICHDContactsbyPhase/Pages/default.aspx.
