Purpose

Over the coming year, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), in collaboration with its external communities, will identify the most promising scientific opportunities of the next decade across the breadth of the Institute’s mission. The aim of this process is to develop a scientific vision that sets an ambitious agenda and inspires the Institute, its many partners, and the research community to achieve critical scientific goals and meet pressing public health needs.

To create this vision, the NICHD is planning to hold a series of nine workshops in Bethesda, Maryland, beginning in the fall of 2010 and ending in the spring of 2011. Each workshop will center on a different scientific theme and involve a multidisciplinary group of researchers, clinicians, and policy experts. The series of workshops will culminate in a conference, tentatively planned for May 2011, and ultimately, one or more NICHD Vision statements worthy of publication in a major journal.

The NICHD welcomes public input throughout the process. Please send questions or comments to NICHDvision@mail.nih.gov.
