Release Date:  September 5, 2007

National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) (http://www.nichd.nih.gov)

In December 2006, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) issued a Request for Applications (RFA) entitled Integration of Food and Nutrition into Prevention, Care, and Treatment of HIV Infection and AIDS (R03).  The NICHD plans to reissue this RFA in the fall of 2007, seeking  domestic or foreign small research grant applications to evaluate the impact of new guidelines (e.g., WHO Guidelines for nutritional care of people living with HIV and AIDS; the PEPFAR Policy Guidance on the Use of Emergency Plan Funds to Address Food and Nutrition Needs) and the impact of new programs to improve diet and nutritional status on existing programs aimed at caring for and treating people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.  In the recent past, countries, funding agencies, and international programs designed to address the global AIDS pandemic have developed new strategies and guidance to incorporate food and nutrition interventions into local, regional, and country-level HIV/AIDS programs.  Despite the increased activity and attention to food and nutrition, few studies have assessed the feasibility or impact of these new programs on existing programs and/or ongoing trials addressing other aspects of HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment.  Consequently, ongoing activities, both clinical research and provision of care and treatment, have been impacted by the infusion of food and nutritional care.  There has been little effort to assess how these changes might impact existing protocols or programs, or the feasibility of implementing these new programs across different settings.  The planned RFA is intended to stimulate and strengthen a multidisciplinary approach to a complex, under-researched area and to form a basis for future research and clinical care in the U.S. and globally.
