NICHD Policy on Career Development Program (K12) Support and Clinical Fellowships

Notice Number: NOT-HD-07-016

Key Dates
Release Date: May 3, 2007

Issued by
National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), (http://www.nichd.nih.gov)

Until now, NICHD policy has not permitted appointment of an individual as a Scholar on an NICHD Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Program Award (K12) at the same time he or she is completing the requirements of subspecialty training, including the research requirement. The purpose of this Notice is to rescind this policy, effective immediately. In the future, clinical fellows in subspecialty training may be appointed to an NICHD K12 program providing that all the K12 requirements are met, including continuity on the K12 and maintaining 75 percent time in research.

This approach would allow a clinical fellow to enter the K12 program in the final research year of subspecialty clinical fellowship training. That year would be counted as the initial part of the K12 experience, not an additional year in the K12 program.

Please note that all other requirements of each K12 program remain in effect. However, because each of the NICHD K12 programs has somewhat different requirements, consultation with the relevant Program Officer, listed below, is encouraged.
