National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS)
This Notice clarifies the disciplinary scope and increases the maximum Training Related Expenses for the Trans-Departmental Basic Biomedical Sciences (TBB) program area of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences Predoctoral Basic Biomedical Sciences Research Training Program (T32). These changes will be effective for new and non-competing renewal awards beginning in FY2026.
Background
NIGMS supports the training of future scientists and enhancing research capacity at organizations Nationwide. The Trans-Departmental Basic Biomedical Sciences (TBB) program area (previously Transdisciplinary Basic Biomedical Sciences) is one of 12 program areas NIGMS supports through PAR-23-228 . The goals of the TBB program area are to broaden the organizational and geographic distribution of rigorous basic biomedical research training programs, as well as to enhance organizational research training capacity. TBB programs provide students with research training opportunities from the breadth of biomedical disciplines available at participating organizations.
Applicants identify the program area to which they are applying on the SF424(R&R) Cover Form, in the Agency Routing Identifier Field (4b). TBB applicants should include 12 TBB in this field.
The following sections of the NOFO have been modified as depicted below (changes are noted in bold italics):
Program Considerations
Through this funding opportunity, NIGMS will accept predoctoral training grant applications for programs in one of 12 areas in the basic biomedical sciences supported by the Institute. Organizations may hold only one training grant per area. Applicants are strongly encouraged to read information about NIGMS predoctoral training grant programs found on the NIGMS website and to contact program staff before preparing or submitting an application to verify that the proposed program is eligible and in alignment with NIGMS funding priorities.
For consideration in the Trans-Departmental Basic Biomedical Sciences (TBB) program area, applicants may not have an active NIGMS predoctoral T32 in any other basic biomedical science area at the time of the TBB T32 award. TBB programs are expected to provide students with research training opportunities from the breadth of biomedical disciplines available at participating organizations. Proposed TBB programs that are narrowly focused (such as those focused on a single or limited number of biomedical disciplines at organizations with multiple biomedically relevant departments) will be a low priority for funding.
To enhance the capacity for rigorous research training Nationwide, NIGMS encourages organizations with few or no NIH predoctoral T32s, and organizations in IDeA states to apply for the TBB program area. Additionally:
Training Related Expenses
NIH will provide funds to help defray other research training expenses, such as health insurance, staff salaries, consultant costs, equipment, research supplies, and faculty/staff travel directly related to the research training program. The most recent levels of training related expenses are announced annually in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts, and are also posted on the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) webpage.
For applicants to the Trans-Departmental Basic Biomedical Sciences (TBB) program area (Agency Routing Identifier Field: 12 TBB), NIGMS will provide training-related expenses support at a rate of $12,500/trainee/year.
All other aspects of the NOFO remain the same.
