This Notice of change to PAR-24-128 "Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) (T32)" is designed to enhance the organizational and geographic distribution of rigorous dual-degree clinician-scientist research training programs. The programs will fall under a new track, the NIGMS Medical Scientist Training Program Advancing Health and Development (MSTP-AHeAD) program area which will be effective for new and non-competing renewal awards beginning in FY2026.
Background
Improving population health and addressing the burden of chronic disease requires a well-trained clinician-scientist workforce. Currently, only 3% of NIGMS' Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) awards are at organizations in Institutional Development Award (IDeA)-eligible states, and no MSTP awards are at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) or Tribal colleges and universities (TCUs). This limits the ability of the clinician-scientist workforce to address the health needs of every community across the United States. The goals of the MSTP-AHeAD program area are to broaden the organizational and geographic distribution of rigorous dual-degree clinician-scientist research training programs and to enhance clinician-scientist research training capacity nationwide.
The following is detailed information about the modifications to the NOFO.
