PAR-19-219 - Maximizing Access to Research Careers (T34)

Issued by

National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS)

Purpose

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) intends to reissue PAR-19-219 "Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC)" with minor modifications. Modifications to the planned Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) include an emphasis on promoting safety in the research training environment and teaching to the highest practices in biomedical research.

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive applications.

The FOA is expected to be published before the Spring of 2021 with an expected application due date in Spring 2021.

The FOA will utilize the T34 activity code.

Research Initiative Details

This funding opportunity aims to develop a diverse pool of undergraduates who complete their baccalaureate degree, and transition into and complete biomedical, research-focused higher degree programs (e.g., Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.). This FOA provides support to eligible, domestic institutions to develop and implement effective, evidence-based approaches to biomedical training and mentoring that will keep pace with the rapid evolution of the research enterprise.

For diversity enhancing programs, NIGMS recognizes separate institutional eligibility tracks: research-intensive, i.e., those with an average of NIH research project grant (RPG) funding greater than or equal to $7.5 million total costs over the past 3 fiscal years; and research-active, i.e., those with an average of RPG funding less than $7.5 million total costs over the last 3 fiscal years (RPG data are available through NIH RePORT). For example, prospective applicants for this funding opportunity in FY 2021 should review their RPG funding for FYs 2018, 2019, and 2020 to determine eligibility. Institutional eligibility for this FOA is limited to baccalaureate degree-granting research-intensive institutions.
