National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS)
This is a Request for Information (RFI) to invite comments and suggestions on the framework for the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) 2021-2025 strategic plan.
Background
The mission of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) is to support basic research that increases understanding of biological processes and lays the foundation for advances in disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention. NIGMS-funded scientists investigate how living systems work at a range of levels, from molecules and cells to tissues, whole organisms, and populations. The Institute also supports research in certain clinical areas, primarily those that affect multiple organ systems. To assure the vitality and continued productivity of the research enterprise, NIGMS provides leadership in training the next generation of scientists, in enhancing the diversity of the scientific workforce, and in developing research capacities throughout the country.
The development of a strategic plan serves as an important opportunity to reflect on the core values of NIGMS, the outcomes of the Institute’s prior strategic plan, and how to proactively construct a management guide for the upcoming five years.
The prior NIGMS Strategic Plan was released in 2015 and is available here. A summary of outcomes and progress on the goals of that strategic plan is available here.
Information Requested
NIGMS has begun the process of developing a strategic plan for CY 2021-2025. As a first step in this process, Institute staff have developed a draft framework of broad goals and objectives for the new plan. Some of the goals are continuations from the current plan while others represent modifications or additions of goals and objectives. To ensure an appropriately targeted and effective plan, NIGMS requests your feedback. Comments will be used to help shape this framework and the ensuing strategic plan.
The NIGMS seeks comments on any of the following topics:
