Purpose

The purpose of this Notice is to inform potential applicants to the NIGMS Technology Development R21 (PAR-19-254) and R01 (PAR-19-253) funding opportunity announcements (FOAs) of an upcoming webinar on planning submissions to this program. Participation in the webinar, although encouraged, is optional and is not required for application submission.

Background

The NIGMS technology development FOAs support two stages of technology development: Stage 1 from concept to proof of concept (R21) and Stage 2 from feasibility to working prototype (R01).

The technology development FOAs encourage evaluation of technological hypotheses without the pressure to additionally test unknown biological questions. Technologies might originate from biomedical disciplines or from engineering and the physical sciences. Examples include instruments, devices, processes, algorithms, software, chemicals, biomolecules, or cells that have potential value for generating new basic biomedical research. Applications submitted to these FOAs that include untested biological hypotheses will not be funded. Validation studies are appropriate for these FOAs, and descriptions of the future biological utility to research within the mission of NIGMS are strongly recommended.

Webinar Information

During this webinar, NIGMS staff will discuss areas of science within the NIGMS mission, the process by which applications will be assessed for fit to the program, and key review criteria that should be kept in mind during application preparation.
