Purpose

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) announces the availability of funds for Administrative Supplements to NIGMS-funded Institutional Development Award (IDeA) Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) (P20) awards. These funds are intended for existing INBREs to develop collaborations between investigators at the INBRE partner institutions, including primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs), community colleges (CCs) and Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs), and investigators supported by Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) or IDeA-Infrastructure for Clinical and Translational Research (IDeA-CTR) awards, in research areas that are currently supported by COBREs or IDeA-CTRs. The goal of this funding opportunity is to encourage collaborations by investigators supported by different IDeA funding initiatives while providing students a broad continuum of research opportunities.

Applications by INBREs must be submitted to PA-18-591 "Administrative Supplements to Existing NIH Grants and Cooperative Agreements (Parent Admin. Supp. Clinical Trial Optional)" by May 31, 2019. The application must clearly describe the significance of the project and the nature of the collaboration. The Research Strategy section of the application is limited to 6 pages. The Approach section of the Research Strategy should include two 2-page subsections, each prepared by the investigator(s) from the INBRE partner institution and the COBRE or IDeA-CTR-supported investigator(s) to describe their respective plans. The Research Strategy section should include a description of how students from the INBRE partner institution will be included in the collaborative research project proposed. The collaborative project should be an expansion of a project currently supported by a COBRE or IDeA-CTR award. The project must not constitute a change in scope of the parent INBRE or COBRE/IDeA-CTR award.

The application should also include Letters of Support from the INBRE PD/PI and the COBRE or IDeA-CTR PD/PI detailing mentoring plans and resources that will be available to support the collaboration.

Requests can be no more than $100,000 in direct costs exclusive of Facilities and Administrative costs on sub-contracts. Requests may be for one year of support only. No more than 40% of the request can go to the collaborator(s) supported by the COBRE or IDeA-CTR award. As part of the budgetary justification, a statement regarding the expenditure of currently available unobligated grant funds should be included.

Only one supplement request per INBRE will be accepted.
